Creating your own document, or having it created for you, before you enter the printing process can save you time and money. If there are problems with your digital file when submitted to the printer your cost and time frame will be impacted.

Kuehn Printing has outlined some helpful suggestions to make this process more efficient. Following these guidelines will help ensure the integrity of your document and the highest quality possible for your finished product.

• Do supply us with any hard copies that you have. Matching the color you want is easier to achieve if we have a sample to work from.

• Do use programs such as QuarkXPress® or applications within the Adobe Creative Suite® package if you plan to create documents that use multiple colors and graphics. Designing a project for commercial, offset output in a word processing program meant for desktop printer output often presents problems with fonts and graphics.

• Do give us all the files necessary to print the job. Packaging the fonts and images along with the final piece will expediate our process. Also, it is often impossible to print your piece without these essential elements.

• Avoid the use of JPG or GIF images as these formats are really meant for web or multimedia use and not for a print environment. EPS or TIF files will ensure highest quality and PDF files can also be used. In Adobe InDesign® PSD or AI files may be used as well, with favorable results.

• Try not to place an EPS graphic within another EPS graphic unless you plan to package the placed EPS graphic along with the rest of the images. This is a major cause of Postscript errors and will create printing problems.

• Do use CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) or PMS (Pantone Matching System) colors. RGB color files need to be converted to CMYK files or they will print incorrectly.
